On 12 November the ship nosed her way down the Delaware River once more and, after two weeks of standardization trials off the naval base at Guantanamo, Cuba, she headed west across the Caribbean for the Panama Canal, reaching the Pacific on 4 December. There followed additional training in shore bombardment and anti-aircraft firing off San Diego and another visit to a navy yard, this time at Hunter’s Point, near San Francisco.
